The timely administration of medications is essential for optimal therapeutic benefit to the patient, especially those medications that can be considered time critical. These “time critical” medications are a class of medications (Anti-infectives, Anticoagulants, Insulin for example) that must be administered within a defined time window to ensure the intended therapeutic effect. This window is typically 30 minutes before or after the scheduled dose. Organizations are required to identify these medications and establish policies for their timely administration.
Our teams have noted that organizations are not compliant with their policies with timely administration. Furthermore, there are opportunities for organizations to monitor administration time compliance. Organizations should ensure they have established clear policies and procedures for administration of time-critical medications. Ensure that training and awareness of the importance of timely administration is in place. Validate that accurate documentation of exact times of medication administration is in place. Leaders should ensure they are monitoring for time critical medication administration as part of their medication management quality assurance measures. Data should be analyzed and any barriers addressed such as workforce shortages, lack of e-prescribing, or inadequate medication availability.
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (IMSP) has an excellent reference guide for timely medication administration that can support organizations developing/reviewing their policy. https://www.ismp.org/sites/default/files/attachments/2018-02/tasm.pdf
