Sample medications can provide a great resource to Providers who want to initiate starter supplies when patients are started on a new medication. They are convenient for patients—particularly those who lack financial or transportation resources. However, they must be managed to ensure that supplies are available and that patients who use them are safe.
We are noticing more organizations with sample medications stocks that have numerous opportunities with sample medication management. Predominately, we are observing a lack of inventory control where the organization documents medications received and those dispensed. Additionally, organizations do not have a means to effectively track medications in the event of a supplier recall. Inventories and patient records are missing lot numbers that would support quick identification of affected patients. Other observations include expired medications in sample stocks. This is reflective of the lack of organized oversight in managing inventory. Furthermore, in some situations, we are observing medical technicians dispensing sample medications (under direction of the Provider) without oversight or check to ensure that the proper medication is being handed to the patient.
Organizations with sample medications should ensure they have an organized process in managing inventory and are safety dispensing them to the patient.
