Recently, we are noticing with our surveys that MRI trailers with stretcher lifts are not being used safely and could contribute to a patient/staff fall. Some observations:
- An MRI trailer’s door that was used to bring a gurney patient into the anteroom was open with the lift in the down position. The tech indicated that they had left the door open to enjoy the nice spring weather. However, there was no gate or other guard that would have prevented an accidental fall to the ground below. The height was about 6-7 feet.
- A patient with a walker on wheels was brought up into the MRI trailer via the lift; however, they were left in the standing position and could have fallen with the movement of the lift. They staff were unable to verbalize the procedures for bringing a non-gurney patient up with the lift.
- During discussion with an MRI trailer technician, it was determined that they were not aware if the lift could be used to lower a gurney patient down without electrical power in the event of the need to evacuate the trailer if there was a fire. There was no directions on the lift or instructions for use available.
Organizations with MRI trailers (or other trailers) with lifts should review their safety procedures for transporting patients into/from the trailer. Ensure that staff are competent in operation of the lifts and follow safety procedures. Ensure staff are aware of emergency procedures in using lifts. Ensure staff are following procedures with environmental safety to prevent falls. Make sure you watch that first step.
