Flammable storage cabinets are often observed during surveys in storage areas throughout the organization. Painted a brilliant yellow, they are designed to meet NFPA 30 standards to reduce the risk of the contents, usually chemicals, igniting in the event of a fire or due to environmental conditions. Our consultants are observing several opportunities during our survey activities that put organizations at risk. Organizations should ensure they use an approved cabinet for the chemicals stored within, and that the cabinet is placed in the appropriate location. We have found a flammable storage cabinet that was designed for countertop use, mounted on a wall. This may result in the cabinet not being properly supported by the wall mounts. Additionally, the cabinet was mounted high on the wall, which could put staff at risk for chemical containers falling on them. Ensure that you review and follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding where to place the cabinet. Additionally, we are finding expired chemicals (sometimes by several years) and hazardous chemical containers that are not labeled with the required elements. Organizations should ensure they routinely inspect flammable storage cabinets for expiring chemicals and that containers are properly labeled. See OSHA Brief “Hazard Communication Standard: Labels and Pictograms” for guidance. (https://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/publications/OSHA3636.pdf)
