Beyond Use Dates and Safe Supply Storage

A frequent observation by our team is the discovery of open bulk packages of EKG electrodes without a Beyond Use Date (BUD) indication.  This can lead to the electrode conductive gel drying out and inhibiting a good EKG tracing.  The BUD is set by the manufacturer for specific supplies to indicate that, if a supply package is opened, the supply lifecycle will end prior to the expiration date on the packaging.  Not all supplies will have a BUD; however, organizations should ensure they identify those supplies that do have a BUD and take action to ensure staff follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU) for the BUD.  For example, some IV fluid containers will have a BUD sooner than the expiration date when removed from their protective overwrap.  Some multipatient-use ultrasound-conductive gel containers are only good for 28 days after opening.

Organizations should ensure they identify any BUDs that affect their inventory, communicate these BUDs to end users, establish processes that make it easy for users to identify BUDs on opened supplies, and monitor compliance.  Some organizations place BUD Labels on all affected supplies with instructions as to when the BUD will go into effect after using the product.  This removes any guesswork as to whether a BUD is applicable and the parameters for the BUD.
