Protecting patients and staff from serious injury is imperative in areas surrounding Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment, specifically the large magnet. As you know, an MRI uses powerful magnets to create diagnostic images and can therefore cause magnetic materials to move at high speeds, posing a projectile risk and potentially causing fatal accidents. Access to MRI equipment is established by zones (Zone IV being next to the magnet, Zone III typically being the areas outside of the MRI room, etc.). MRI zones III and IV are access-controlled and require screening for ferrous magnetic items, signage, and locked doors. Unfortunately, our teams have had several incidents where the consultant has been allowed to access Zone III without being screened. These involved organizations where the CT (Computerized Tomography) suite was co-located with the MRI suite. In these instances, the CT tech permitted the consultant into Zone III without performing the required screening. Organizations should ensure that MRI suites that share adjacent spaces to CT (or other service) have all personnel trained in MRI access and that they follow all required procedures when bringing any individual into a restricted access zone. This would include facilities staff, EVS staff, and surveyors.
