Down the Drain:  Improper Waste Disposal in Sinks

Sinks play a key role in hand hygiene and the disposal of authorized waste; however, they also pose a risk if not used appropriately.  Our consulting teams have observed organizations using hand hygiene sinks for improper practices that pose risks to staff and patients.  Some organizations are washing off contaminated surgical instruments in designated hand hygiene sinks.  This practice causes a soiled sink due to the disposal of biohazard waste.  Using the sink for hand hygiene may expose the user to biohazardous waste.  Additionally, observations have been made of lab services using sinks for chemical disposal that are also used for hand hygiene.  Foremost, most lab chemicals cannot be disposed of in the sink unless wastewater systems, pH limits, and dilution protocols are fully compliant.  Disposing of authorized chemicals can make hand hygiene difficult due to chemical exposure.  Finally, observations have been made of these soiled sinks with eye-wash stations, which also expose staff to splash hazards.  Leadership should ensure that sinks are used properly; that only authorized chemicals are disposed of in them; and that soiled sinks are not used for hand hygiene or eye-wash stations.  Soiled sinks should also be labeled to guide staff use.  Include a review of sink use during environmental care rounding.  This can help ensure your organization supports the safety of your staff and the environment.
