Dosimetry badges are an essential part of radiation safety programs to ensure that the amount of exposure by staff is closely monitored. These badges are to be worn by the staff member during procedures to ensure that the amount of exposure is accurately reflected. However, we note that badges, when not in use, are often stored in a way that may result in exposure to radiation. This can result in a “false” reading that indicates an overexposure. We find dosimetry badges stored on lead aprons and in procedure rooms with radiation-emitting equipment. Staff are not storing badges on their workplace badge board, which is in a protected location. Storing badges on lead aprons could result in someone inadvertently using that apron, resulting in an exposure not associated with the assigned staff member. Additionally, storing badges in procedure rooms with C-Arms or other radiation-emitting equipment can result in accidental exposures. These scenarios all result in badge readings that do not accurately reflect the staff member’s exposure.
Review your badge storage practices and policies. Ensure that staff members are educated on proper badge wearing, including badge storage. Review your badge storage practices and address compliance opportunities. Work with your Radiation Safety Officer in addressing opportunities.
