CMS and The Joint Commission expect organizations to provide a safe environment, develop and implement a Security Management Plan and most importantly – protect lives. The Department of Homeland Security has recently issued new resources for different levels of society to help everyone prepare for this unpredictable and often devastating occurrence. Please visit the official link provided and ensure that your organizations security management plan is addressing active shooters, active weapons and other potentials in this arena.
Surveyors will be reviewing your organizations plan and Emergency Preparedness related to items of this nature. All facilities, regardless of location, are expected to have addressed ‘active’ weapons and/or ‘active’ shooters in their facility and in their community. The question is not ‘if this will happen’ but ‘when will this happen’ in our community or facility.
Plan now, prepare now, train now and most significantly – practice now.
