Meet Our Consultants
JUDY B. COURTEMANCHE
President and CEOJudy B. Courtemanche is a healthcare professional with more than 30 years of clinical and administrative experience, including over 12 years as President and Chief Executive Officer of Courtemanche & Associates Healthcare Synergists. Prior to founding Courtemanche & Associates Healthcare Synergists in 1994, she held various nurse executive positions, including chief nurse at a metropolitan medical center, director of a primary care health center and director of emergency and ambulatory surgical services at an inner city hospital, and project director for the implementation of computerized nursing systems at a university medical center.
Ms. Courtemanche has worked for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations as a Surveyor, Team Leader and Faculty member. As Team Leader, she was responsible for facilitating team performance during surveys, surveying standards, and providing education and consultation on site. In her faculty role, she provided educational programs for surveyors, as well as numerous programs through Joint Commission Educational Services for organizational leaders, staff and physicians.
She has been Board Certified in Emergency Nursing, a member of Sigma Theta Tau, and a member of the American Nurses Association. She has served as a member on Editorial Review Boards for professional associations such as the Association of Practitioners and Infection Control and the National Association of Healthcare Quality. In addition, throughout her tenure at the Joint Commission, she assisted with many Joint Commission programs and publications.
Ms. Courtemanche received a Nursing Diploma from Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in Boston, Massachusetts in 1971; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Worcester State College in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1983; and a Master of Science degree in Administration and Nursing from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts in 1985. Ms. Courtemanche resides in Charlotte, North Carolina.
NANCY McLEAN, RN, BSN, MHSA, NHA
Senior ConsultantNancy McLean received her Diploma in Nursing at the Grace Hospital School of Nursing; her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan; and her Masters of Health Services Administration degree from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is also licensed as a Nursing Home Administrator.
In her role as Consulting Associate with Courtemanche & Associates, Ms. McLean serves as a consultant and educator on JCAHO and regulatory matters, and assists clients with Ongoing Accreditation Readiness and Priority Focus processes. For her clients, Nancy provides on-site system evaluations, consultation, education, training, and technical assistance, develops corrective action plans and timelines, and assists staff with maintaining current knowledge of healthcare trends, regulatory compliance requirements and proven solutions for improving patient care. In order to provide JCAHO consultation and education, Nancy has been trained under the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals and the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Long Term Care. She is also cross-trained to provide consultation and education in Behavioral Health, Home Care and Ambulatory services.
Prior to joining Courtemanche & Associates, Ms. McLean has held several nurse executive positions, including Chief Nurse Executive of Christus Health Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, Director of Nursing of Life Care Center in Sarasota, Florida, Executive Director of Ambulatory of Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Florida, Director of Inpatient and Emergency Services of The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and Director of Quality at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan. In her most current position, Ms. McLean provided consultative oversight for many corporate facilities, culminating in regulatory compliance and JCAHO success. In 2004, Ms. McLean led her organization to be named the 2004 JCAHO Ernest A. Codman Award Winner in the long term care category.
Ms. McLean has been affiliated with Florida Health Care Association, where she was named Nurse Administrator of the Year, Society for Ambulatory Care Professionals, and the National Medical Association. Ms. McLean has also been a featured presenter and educator for the JCAHO International Congress on Performance Improvement and Measurement in Health Care.
MARCIA TRENN, BS
Associate Consultant & Life Safety SpecialistMarcia has a national presence in the areas of Emergency Management and Preparedness. She has spoken nationally related to her community’s response to the Rhode Island Station Nightclub Fire, and has written articles appearing in such publications as the JCAHO’s Environment of Care News.
Ms. Trenn joins Courtemanche & Associates as a consultant and educator on JCAHO and regulatory matters, with an emphasis on Environment of Care and Emergency Preparedness. For her clients, she will provide on-site risk assessments, vulnerability assessments, evaluation of emergency management preparation and review of critiques related to individual organizations as well as community readiness structures.
Ms. Trenn will also provide consultation related to Workers Compensation, where she has developed a comprehensive "Workplace Violence Reduction Program”, as well as proactive programs to support “Safe Patient Handling”, where she has been successful in reducing employee injuries in healthcare organizations. Ms. Trenn has recently been a featured presenter to the International Workers Compensation Foundation. Other areas of expertise include Litigation Preparedness, assisting organizations with trial deposition preparation and review, as well as minimizing risk associated with general and professional liability cases.

Prior to joining Courtemanche & Associates, Ms. Trenn served as the Director of Risk Management and Emergency Preparedness at St. Joseph’s Health Services of Rhode Island, in Providence, Rhode Island. Ms. Trenn has over 30 years of healthcare experience in areas such as Workers Compensation Management, Legal/Claims Management, Risk Management, Environment of Care and Emergency Preparedness.

MARTIN J. PIEPOLI, III, MSW
Associate ConsultantMartin J. Piepoli is a resident of Columbia, South Carolina. He received his Masters in Social Work and Community Planning from the University of Maryland at Baltimore, and his Bachelors of Science in Psychology from Towson State University, Towson, Maryland. He has served in leadership and staff roles at medical centers in Maryland and South Carolina. He also serves as adjunct faculty and clinical field instructor for the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina.
Mr. Piepoli is an Associate Consultant for Courtemanche & Associates Healthcare Synergists. He provides ongoing support to organizations for performance improvement, JCAHO accreditation, and CMS requirements. He has served as faculty and speaker for Patient Advocacy groups, JCAHO Compliance issues, and Patient Safety expectations.
Mr. Piepoli has served as Joint Commission Survey Coordinator for successful accreditation campaigns. He has lead and served on JCAHO prep teams for acute care hospitals with tertiary and ambulatory services. In addition, he has also served as Director of Patient Advocacy, Director of Social Service, Clinical Social Worker and in other leadership and advocacy roles for healthcare and the community.
He has co-authored Grants for Patient Advocacy, developed Senior Health Promotion Programs, and transitioned departments from traditional social work to quality resource and case management models. He is a member of the Society for Social Work Leadership in Healthcare, the National Association of Social Workers, and is a certified instructor of the National Crisis Prevention Institute.
He serves on many boards and committees and is currently the President Elect for the Carolinas Chapter Society for Consumer Healthcare Advocacy 2006-2007.
